5 Attractions You Don’t Want to Miss During Your Minnesota Northwoods Vacation
With all the activities available in Minnesota Northwoods, some people never leave their resort while vacationing with us. They can hike, fish, participate in water activities and more without ever leaving the grounds. But if you’re more of an explorer, there are plenty of attractions outside of our resorts to take in during your Minnesota vacation. With so many to choose from, we’ve narrowed it down for you to five of our favorites. In this list, you’ll find a little something for everyone.
1. Itasca State Park
Be sure to set plenty of time aside if you decide to visit Itasca (sometimes spelled Itaska) State Park. The oldest and most popular state park in Minnesota contains the headwaters of the Mississippi River, 6,000 acres of old-growth pines (including the largest red pine and largest white pine in the state) and more than 100 lakes. You could:
- Hike or bike
- Take a guided boat tour
- Visit historic landmarks
- Partake in one of the weekly naturalist activities offered
Whatever you decide to do, you will certainly enjoy your day at Itasca State Park. Please note that a state park sticker or daily permit is required.
2. Downtown Bemidji
Downtown Bemidji provides a wide range of activities and attractions. It is home to an 18-foot statue of legendary Bemidji native Paul Bunyan, along with a statue of his companion Babe the Blue Ox, both built in 1937. For the kiddos, there is the Headwaters Science Center, which offers hands-on science and technology exhibits and programs. History buffs will want to visit the Beltrami County History Center where they can view historical artifacts, photographs and manuscripts. Downtown Bemidji also offers a unique shopping experience with a number of quaint thrift and antique shops, outlet stores and boutiques, all in a historic setting.
3. Paul Bunyan’s Animal Land
While in Downtown Bemidji, be sure to stop by nearby Paul Bunyan’s Animal Land where you’ll find nearly 100 animals representing every continent on the planet. You can walk among the deer, feed a bear, pet camels, and visit lions, tigers, bears, lemurs, kangaroos, and monkeys, just to name a few.
4. Golf Courses
Don’t forget your golf clubs! The area’s golf courses feature rolling, wooded terrain that creates a picturesque golf setting. And with six different courses, you’ll love the variety and challenge of Northwoods country.
5. Casinos
The Northwoods isn’t just for daytime fun. You can try your luck at the area’s three casinos: The Palace Casino , Northern Lights Casino and White Oak Casino. In addition to a wide variety of games, including slots, blackjack, poker and even bingo, these casinos provide great dining options.
This list is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many more recreation options both in and around Minnesota Northwoods’ resorts.
