Why Minnesota Northwoods?

Minnesota boasts some of the best grouse hunting in the nation. In fact, there are 528 designated hunting areas in the ruffed grouse range covering nearly 1 million acres—not to mention 11 million acres of public hunting land, such as the Chippewa National Forest. It’s not unusual for guests to bag 10-plus flushes a day. It’s also fertile land for waterfowl hunting. Waterfowl hunters will be sure to appreciate the diversity of hunting areas ranging from large lakes, reservoirs and rivers, to shallow lakes, wild rice lakes, potholes, bottomland and beaver ponds. Fowl not your thing? How about deer? White-tailed deer are a popular big game animal found in every Minnesota county. Due to hunting regulations and a milder-than-usual winter, deer should be plentiful, but be sure to check this year’s regulations regarding restrictions on hunting them. If you are looking for more adventure, Minnesota Northwoods is also a prime spot for black bear hunting, but you have to plan ahead. If you have not completed an application for this year, you’re out of luck—the deadline was May 3. But there’s always next year!

When to Go

In general, hunting season usually starts in September and is over near the end of the calendar year. Of course, it all depends on what you’re hunting and your weapon of choice. The Minnesota DNR has a full schedule for hunting and trapping opening and closing dates, as well as application deadlines. We can tell you that if you’re looking to hunt among the beautiful fall foliage, late September is your best bet as that is the peak of the fall colors in these parts. The last week of September through later in October tends to be the best time for grouse and woodcock hunting.

Licensing

The licensing options for hunters can be confusing, to say the least! Fortunately, most of our resorts are licensed agents who can help you purchase the right hunting license without leaving your resort.
