Cass Lake, Minnesota is a wonderful community to make a part of your Minnesota Northwoods summer vacation! As you explore the lakes in the area, you’ll soon learn that there’s actually two different lakes and they are just part of the eight-lake system of Mississippi navigable lakes. The main lake is 15,996 acres with a maximum depth of 120 feet, making it perfect for watercraft and watersports.
The Cass Lake area is an angler’s paradise. With its weed-beds, steep drop-offs, and inlets, Cass Lake makes the perfect place to fish for the big one. The waters are home to muskie, walleye, northern pike, bass, perch, crappie, bluegill and many more.
The shores of Cass Lake and Pike Bay, the second more shallow lake, border the Chippewa National Forest, which is home to more than 150 bald eagles. One of the most unique and interesting features of Cass Lake is Star Island, which has its own lake, Lake Windigo situated within the confines of the island featuring more than six miles of hiking trails.
Trails are one of the best ways to see the Chippewa National Forest! 41 miles of paved bike trails line the west side of the forest. The Migizi Trail circles Pike Bay on a 19 mile paved loop. The Heartland Trail runs from Cass Lake to Park Rapids and has 47 miles of paved trail. Biking is a fun activity for the whole family! Most Minnesota state trails are paved and constructed on former railroads, so they are usually level and kid-friendly.
